Auli?

I haven’t hear from you in a long time, is everything okey?

Oh…si… Curanto!

Curanto

To Terhi

Hi!

Yes, “Se Vende” means “for sale”

I told you that I am an architect, but I feel more jeweller. When I founded the jewelry, I realized that it was the best way to “do” what happens inside of me, from A to Z!

The architecture has been appearing and disappearing, but 2 years ago, Matias was born, and now, I decided to devote myself to him and jewelry.

I send to you this picture of my new experiments.

Oh! I will travel to Barcelona in mid-October to late November, which is why I will be very loosely connected. If you travel to Barcelona, it would be great to have the opportunity to meet you.

gnam gnam… migrations and arrogance in chile

hi natalie,
i was quite away from the blog because the flesh-blood-tools world is being a bit busy.
i agree meals can tels us a lot about migrations and building identities.
at the south of chile we have the delicious ‘curanto’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curanto
, which is a community event that brings people together. I’ve been in a few and the experience was amaizing and both belly and heart very nurturing.
very interesting is the fact that there could be strong relations across the pacific ocean on linking and maybe populating or connecting this part of the globe whit the other side of the pool (i love to think that and i love to think about the south idea). pacific islands has this same way of cooking and sweet potato also… something to go deeper soon.

now, after having the belly full, i would like to be more critical about our social structure and identity here in chile, which is home for me now.
i apologize if the text is a bit messy and unorganized, but i’ll try to do it allright.
we are a post-colonial nation still defining and constructing our own identity.
we have received many immigrations by the time, which has created what i think i am: a mestizo, a mix (which now is not just the clasical aproach native-spanich).
but we haven’t got this races-melting-pot very fairly .
talking about the gray area, and the gray color could be very useful for discuss about it. As mainstream, we chileans tend to think in the cheapest approach to printing: using the draft possibility in black and white. you will understand that soon.
if you ask anyone about the tension of races here, all people tend to say that we are very tolerant and so on.
but we are not. actually, we don’t talk about ‘blackness’ because we are not used to have much african immigration (and obviously it is not polite to say black as race… but we say ‘negrito or negrita’ as a very warm nickname… love paradoxes).
i remember when i was a kid walking with my grandma in downtown and all people was tourning to see to the same direction… it was a black guy walking and all people was pointing out him, just because he has a different skin color. the situation has not improve so much by the time.
now, having chile a quite strong economy and stable politics, a lot of central and south americans are immigrating here. and we are not the most friendly people with immigrants, not event with our closers foreigners. chileans are getting more and more arrogant about how chile is developing overwieing and discriminating specific nationalities us peruvians and bolivians. but in our mental structure we don’t have the classical racist association of ‘black-nigger’ (because the black immigration is very recent here), so because of that we tend to think that we are not racist.
but we are very racist with brownish-skin-people (that is our approach to the anti black racism)… which is very stupid: we are brown all of us! (and we have already a quite dirty races-history).
pretty obvious is the next comment, the mainstream is quite willing to reciev european immigration or to say that we have european blood, better if they have whitish skin (a very used joke is ‘mejorar la raza’ – to improve the race… so the other saying is quite right that ‘entre broma y broma la verdad se asoma’ – between jokes the truth appears).
on the top of that, us a country we have a very unrepresented and discriminated native cultures (we allowed to get cultures exterminated, land robbed, names forgotten, natives exported to human exhibitions, using anti-terrorist laws for put the in jail and so on).
other important immigrations are oriental people in the north (and now in all the country), people from balcans both in the north and south, and germans in the south between many others.
so, for putting easier, we are not just walking the gray area in chile, but we all are gray (or brown)… but we want to be white…. that make sense to anyone? sure it doesn’t.
can the colors-pallete even not be just in the grays scale? can we be proud of the different migrations and respect them as contribution to this work-in-progress-identity?

i would like to tell you a bit more about our wide doble-estandar (double-standards) in a next post.

on the other hand, here is very active now in contemporary art (unfortunately not jewelry yet… but will be soon) with fair Chaco http://www.feriachaco.cl/
and the trienal http://www.trienaldechile.cl/
… at the fair i got very interested on the bolivian, peruvian and colombian galeries that were exhibiting at the feria… and a lot of people get interested on them too……….
could art be a useful tool to get more tolerance, curiosity and fairness for the “amigo cuando es forastero” (the foreigner friend)? or can art reflect the unfair situation and propose new paths of development or presence on the media?
it is a naive aim? i don’t think so.
(i would like to write that in spanish for get it clearer and better, but i rather ask to you your understanding about my basic english skills.)
warmest,
nano

Hello Christoph,

I present to you a fantastic Mexico-American performancer  Guillermo Gomez Peña with his presentation  EXTERMINATOR , always shows the fusion of cultures and the advantages and disadvantages they carry.

For me to work and walk through life looking for inspiration in itself a happening and that is what for me makes the jewelry so complex that not only has to do with the process of creation but also with the visual communication when be used.

Hi Andrea…this post it’s about barriers….limits and borders….

*I will be out until saturday. See you soon!

Hello christoph, I m sorry I haven’t written to you before,but  I was very busy….

Let us talk about Migration…when I have to think about this , always have I to think about home.

For me “home” they are all concepts and ideas that always  go with you and that they had an influence in your life … I am called this “Cultural References”

Are they these references those who make us understand in a different way the life?

For example, when I came to  Belgium, and was talking to people about some topic, I saw that although we talked about the same thing we had a different interpretation of our words, firs I had the idea it is because I can’t talk the lenguage  but then when I could speak the lenguage I realized it wasn’t the language but the cultural references.

this is the way  I use to find my home in this country ,I forget never where I come from and I try to find the balance between my past and  my new influences, whit what I see and what I do, I try to use this influences when I make  my work; and  is fascinating to see how people react to each piece to its symbolism and meaning.

this is the reason why I love to work whit jewellery.IMG_1307Jorge

Hi Carolina,

The Chinese pagode in Chile does have something pretty ridiculous except for those Chinese owners that appear to have been ‘stranded’ in Chile. Especially when the idyll includes plastic garden chairs – they have always been my idea of the cheapest and unstylish, untasteful things to put in one’s environment!

I-O-1-Engl92

I-O-2-Engl92

Calurosos Saludos   Eduardo.

I am glad to read your post Carolina, I feel embarrass that this answer was not send sooner but there were troubles that obstruct me, sorry .

I think it will be very pleasant to exchange so diverse visions and from different places.

Tell me about what you search for;   I am interest in know what ideas you have on this matter

Maybe to proceed, we have to talk more about our ideas and define.

About the cars, my attention increases recently.  Initially I had done other works in painting as a series, on which I pretend to represent the formal order of daily Mexico City transit.

Subjective situation because of the large quantity of variables and disconnection between them

However, when I land in the medium of jewelry, which in a way is: three-dimensional, very specifically related to the body, different in many aspects to painting, reappear Mexico City transit scenes, on which the result character was different, also linked with representation, more narrative drawing manner in a way related to the employed elements. This atract me  because of the playing situation that establish with the body, run through virtually as a geographic relief. Of course, that is a simple idea, but it takes me to think in different possibilities about the problems in question.transit

In this process, many things are gone into the garbage can, and taken as experience.

Maybe each discipline include into this exchange has its own part: Crafts, Design, and Art. In some cases the subjective no rational intention or then at the middle point between function an esthetics, at the end, the first, the central precise idea from the indefinite.

What you mention about we would benefit by sending small (inexpensive) objects by post, sounds well, it will be right to define how an also the ideas.

See you soon Carolina. Warm greetings, Eduardo

is not china

It is not China, its a Chinese restaurant in Chile (Limache city). I was there today.

I feel that all this staging it’s for re-create their own culture topics. The Chinese restaurant, pagoda, and lagoon with red fishes. Do they fell at home? What do we do to feel like at home? The home sweet home you said before…

You hang your favorite picture.

You paint the walls.

You put a flower in a vase.

You put pictures on the fridge.

You leave a magazine in the bathroom.

Clues, thoughts, fragments, experiments, hangover, etc

Hi Dani….

Not having internet access these days feels very strange, like a body part is missing, and getting on with things in the usual way is not really possible.  So I am grateful that I am connected again and that we can continue blogging our thoughts here.  You gave me a clue.  I have been trying to figure out what is written there.  I keep on looking at it and my mind really wants to know, it just wants the mystery to end as soon as possible so it can move on.  I think that this is sad really (and I appologize to you on behalf of my mind).  Maybe I need the mystery to stay alive and perhaps that is how I see the clue, not figuring things out and leaving the mystery/the unknown exactly where it was in the first place, untouched and pure (…..aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, my mind screams in agony!).

I have a hangover now.  I went out for a few drinks last night and now I feel a bit rough around the edges.  But it was worth it, to emerge from my modern hibernation cave and to make physical contact with the real world, with real people.  I think I mentioned to you before, but I find myself in a general gray area in my life.  What previously was only concerned with jewellery has now spread to all areas of [my+life], which can be a bit frustrating at times.  UNDER CONSTRUCTION.  I used to love making jewellery, but in some way, this is fading, slowly becoming transparent to the light and something else is beginning to shine through, yet I cannot make out what this is yet.  But I did start some tests and experiments yesterday (see photo).  Not sure what will come out of this, but hopefully some beautiful white crater-like-glaze-surface-of-the-moon results.  I love experimenting and if I wasn’t making jewellery, I would have been a chef because I think that cooking uses the same kind of energy, at least for me.

Last year I made a collection of work called Hadal Realm.  The Hadal Realm, or Hadal Zone, is the deepes part of the ocean, where cold pressurised darkness prevails and all the debris from the colourful world above rains down.  I thought that this and the human subconscious mind have a lot in common.  This year I was going to start a new collection, but as my passion is fading, I just made some addition pieces.  This picture is of some of the tests, experiments, left-overs, materials, things, bits, fragments, ideas, thoughts, etc.

Now you know a bit more about how I tick…….

Hello dear Connie,

You are not late at all with your answer and please never feel forced to answer quick!
I hope your cold is over, is it still warm in Greece or can you feel the autumn too?
And how is it going with you big project, is it already visible from outside?

You are so right with what you are writing about these firewalls, they keep a lot of secrets behind and because it is clearly a house you immediately think about the people who are living there.

What I like about these houses is this compression till the most necessary. To reduce something to its basis, let it contains so much more and let the fantasy start to rotate much more as if you see all.

Once I participated in an exhibition with the title ‘Je mourir ou je m’attache’ (I die where I feel attached to). For me it was clear that it has to do everything with home that of course you want to die where you feel protected and I used a three-dimensional triangle shape as a kind of basis shape for a house (the roof). A long story but to make it short a house in its symbolic meaning everyone needs, especially when you are travelling or living in abroad or having migration background or whatever, you always need a place to return too.

Also the interaction between architecture and society is so interesting to see, the structure many houses can create while standing together or only the outer shape of a single house, it’s construction. It is fascinating to thing about the stories of the people in the houses, what are they doing there, what is their destiny. How does the shape of the house influence their life, what have they add to the house, how does they changed it.

In what kind of house you are living and how does it influence your daily life?

I will attach a photo of a building from a Japanese group called Sanaa (I’m a big fan of them)
I like the lightness, the transparency and the reduction of their creations.

Probably it will take a while till I can answer next time because I have an exhibition at Marzee and I travel there in a few days and stay there of coursee also a few days,
hSanaaave a nice Sunday,
all the best Karin

a cross by two parallel lines

Hi Miguel, thanks for the nice photo you’ve posted. I can see some line crossing with this work of mine. I did it for the dutch fair Sieraad 2007 and contest under the theme Symbols of Faith.

'There is nothing you can't hold on to', LH 2007

'There is nothing you can't hold on to', LH 2007

For the two pieces I came up with I gave the title There is nothing you can’t hold on to and wrote the following as an additional thought:

There is nothing you can’t hold on to. There isn’t one single way to view the world. There is my way, your way, many ways and that’s exactly where freedom lies. Anyone can have a personal definition of existence and that’s the beautiful thing. Faith becomes a multiform, multicultural, multi-wonder grip.
The line where we hang our thoughts is flexible, swings as we move across our achievements. The paths we trace with conviction aren’t necessarily fixed but they surely should be good. LH2007

I’ve been in your site before and realised you’re mainly working with sculptures and interactive installations.

I am as well curious to know more about your work and specially what made you interested in jewelry?

Hi Leonor

Hi Leonor,

Sorry my last entry was so brief, trying to follow the blog a bit better now and I’d like to learn more about your work and ideas. I’ve enjoyed seeing the range of things posted by you and others thus far.

As for my own work, I must confess that I’m not really a jewelry maker. However, I did reference jewelry in a recent project entitled “Pure Plantainum.” It was a sculptural project that began as an homage to the plátano (green plantain) – a stereotypical yet iconic symbol of Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture. In this series I had actual plantains plated in platinum. The exteriors boast a thin pristine layer of precious metal while the actual fruit decomposes within. They are presented like emblematic jewels that transform cultural stigmas into urban expressions of pride.

Hello from Idar-Oberstein where every second house seems to house a stone cutter or ‘gem stone experience’, where hotels are called Diamond, Amethyst or another stone!

New surroundings, different people mentality, different landscape, architecture… while quickly checking messages at the academy the slightly different placings on the keyboard… Even my laptop is presenting me the German version of YAHOO instead of my usual English one, and all those German advertisings… NO, NO, NO, I want my usual English and Dutch – they add to my home feeling!!!!

I really like the picture Carolina, of your hand on the screen covering HANNA’s hand on the keyboard! It’s exactly my feeling of how similar cultures often seem very alike but then there’s that not quite perfect fit – in this case a couple of Hanna’s fingers not quite covered by your’s.

I’m too exhausted to fix up a picture with this too right now but I hope to get into a  routine here very soon.

Hi Miguel welcome back!

I am still thinking in the micro

unicellular beings/protozoa (emilypic.jpg)

unicellular beings/protozoa (emilypic.jpg)

Protozoa are microscopic creatures, one-celled and the smallest of all animals.

They do breath, move and reproduce like multicelled animals.

They are found in almost all soil, all water and their spores fill the air.

Every time we drink a cup of water we swallow millions of live protozoa.

Nature there and here

Moos_1

Moos_2

Dear Thelma

What a wonderful tree on your picture! Half dead, half alive, strong colours, strange form for a tree.
Abundant nature, fantastic.
Destruction and clearing as a basis for renewal, for a new start. Migration necessarily brings a lot of clearing with it. I can not take everything with me. I have to leave behind people and objects, I have to clear my mind, to get ready to observe and absorb. I can and will bring my memory, my character. I will have my invisible suitcase.
At the beginning of a transfer:
Having signed a contract, agreed to requests, trusted without seeing faces. Ready and especially curious to start in a (for me) new town as if sitting in front of a blank paper.
Entering another world as if entering another life capsule.
At first sight only seeing streets, houses and movements. After a while people, then only faces.
The every day differing to the accustomed back home, the life rhythm, the lights, the sounds such as bicycle bells, ambulance, police, car horns, the voices, the labials and gutturals, the sound volume, the intonation, the subway and its spoken instructions, the music in- and outdoor, drums, flutes and street bands, getting used to, being tired and hearing nevertheless, discovering preferences for sounds. Understanding words. Talking, asking, answering. Missing words, being limited, talking with an accent, making mistakes.
Trying to blend in, in the same time trying to be myself. How far can I go to keep my customs, to preserve my habits? What are my habits? What habits do people in this new place have? People do not talk about accepted customs. How can I discover them?

I was hiking in the mountains. I send you a picture of biological migrants, of moss. They are actually algae, coming from the sea. They adapted extraordinary well to their surroundings.
Still keeping their character.

Take care, bye for now
Luzia
